Admissions

Criteria used in the selection of the entering class include:

  • Cumulative GPA in all college-level courses (all attempts)
  • GPA in science/math courses (all attempts)
  • Completion of prerequisite courses
  • Number of credits of science/math courses with a minimum grade of “C”
  • Communication skills assessed by means of applicant’s writing sample and interview
  • Recommendations provided by references
  • Motivation to become a clinical laboratory scientist
  • Knowledge of the profession as assessed during the interview

Guaranteed Admissions for VCU Students

Students applying to the MLS undergraduate program will be guaranteed admission if the following criteria are met:

  1. VCU GPA: > 3.5
  2. Completion of CLLS 201 with a passing grade (P)
  3. Completion of all prerequisites before the start of the MLS program

Students applying through this option will be required to complete the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences application, which includes a brief essay explaining their interest in entering the profession of medical laboratory sciences. Students who meet the above criteria are not required to interview with an MLS faculty member. Additionally, letters of recommendation are waived. 

Application Process

The application deadline for Fall 2026 admission has been extended to May 30. The electronic portions of the application procedures (including letters of references) must be submitted no later than midnight on May 30. In addition, all transcripts must be received (not postmarked) in the Office of Admissions on or before May 30.

Following review of admission credentials, some applicants may require an interview with the admissions committee. If an interview is needed, the department will contact you. Applicants are notified of committee decisions at the earliest possible date.
