VonCanon receives specialist certification in hematology

Elizabeth VoncanonElizabeth VonCanon, MS, SH(ASCP)CM, instructor in the VCU Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, recently earned her specialist certification in hematology, reflecting expertise in one of the most complex and clinically significant areas of laboratory medicine.

The Specialist in Hematology, or SH(ASCP), certification is awarded to medical laboratory scientists who demonstrate advanced knowledge beyond the generalist level. For VonCanon, the credential represents both mastery of and passion for the discipline, as well as an ongoing commitment to professional growth in a rapidly evolving field.

“Because earning this certification requires a deeper understanding and a wider breadth of hematology knowledge, I am more confident in the content that I teach,” said VonCanon, who teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in hematology and urine and body fluid analysis. “I am able to provide more context to concepts and spark more robust dialogue.”

VonCanon’s achievement also reinforces a core value of the department: modeling lifelong learning for future medical laboratory scientists. In a profession where diagnostic technologies and best practices continually advance, her specialist certification serves as a visible example of continued curiosity and dedication to her field – qualities she hopes students will carry with them into their own careers.

“Learning does not stop at graduation. It is a professional responsibility to stay up to date with new information and practices,” VonCanon said. “I hope it encourages students to seek out their own opportunities for growth and to take pride in developing their expertise.”
