Welcome!

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the VCU’s Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, welcome to our website!

Medical laboratory scientists’ critical role on the health care delivery team is to provide physicians laboratory data, in the areas of hematology, microbiology, immunology, medical chemistry transfusion medicine, and molecular diagnostics, needed for accurate diagnoses and effective management of diseases.

Due to emerging technologies and knowledge of the human condition, the profession of medical laboratory sciences is forever challenging and rewarding. The shortage of medical laboratory scientists in the workforce has ensured job opportunities for our graduates and plentiful student scholarship offerings.

In 2017, we were pleased and honored to celebrate the 90th anniversary of training medical laboratory scientists at VCU, meeting the staffing needs of over half of our medical affiliates’ medical laboratory scientists positions.

For those of you exploring the field of medical laboratory sciences as a potential career, I invite you to peruse our range of academic program offerings including a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science degree completion for certified Medical Laboratory Technicians, Master of Science, and a track in the PhD in Health Related Sciences through the College of Health Professions.

VCU’s academic medical center is rich in resources accessible to students. Our excellent faculty are committed to providing the highest quality of education to shape the future leaders of the profession, conducting research for the advancement of the profession, and affording service to those in our community. Excellence in education and medical training is also attributed to the strong relationship with the student coordinators, laboratory administration, and pathologists of our medical affiliates.

We welcome the opportunity to introduce you to this exciting career and assist you in determining the program that best suits your needs. Contact us with any questions you may have. Thank you for visiting our website.

Sincerely,

Melissa Jamerson, PhD, MLS(ASCP)
