Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Applicants for undergraduate scholarships must be accepted into an accredited program for clinical laboratory scientists. Grade point average, references, professional and extramural activities and financial need are considered.

A.D. Williams Scholarship

This scholarship is distributed in the spring semester to students who are selected based on the criteria: financial need, professionalism and scholastic standing, weighted in that order. A minimum GPA of 2.5 on departmental course work is required to be considered for the scholarship.

Daria Downing Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship was established in memory of Miss Daria Downing. The award is given to a senior student on the basis of scholarship, professionalism and need.

Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship

The VCU Chapter of the Honor Society of the Phi Kappa Phi awards a $2,000 Scholarship annually to a full-time senior student. Each school with an undergraduate program nominates one student. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5.

Virginia Society for Medical Laboratory Science Scholarship

The Virginia Society for Medical Laboratory Science has a scholarship available each year to MLS/MT, CLT/MLT, cytology, and histology students in their last year of training in an accredited program in Virginia.

American Society of Medical Pathology Scholarships

Fifty scholarships of $1,000 each are available to students in their final Medical year of MT, MLT, CT or HT programs.

Alpha Mu Tau Fraternity Scholarships

Alpha Mu Tau is a national honorary fraternity whose purpose is the advancement of the professions in medical laboratory sciences. One of the prime activities of the fraternity is the granting of scholarships. The awards that are available are $1,000-$4,000.

American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Forum for Concerns of Minorities Scholarship

The ASCLS Forum for Concerns of Minorities annually offers a scholarship to minority students enrolled in an accredited Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technician program. The amount is typically $500.00, but it is subject to variation. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or greater and must demonstrate evidence of financial need. The student is encouraged, but not required, to be a member of ASCLS.

Hospital Sponsored Scholarship Program

Students entering the senior year of the undergraduate medical laboratory science program are eligible for financial assistance in return for an employment commitment. The institutions participating in this program are:

  1. VCU Medical Center - up to three $10,000 scholarships available; recipients agree to two years of employment with the Department of Pathology, VCU Medical Center.
  2. University of Virginia Health System Medical Laboratories - $10,000 scholarship to one student who completes Medical rotations at UVAHS Medical Laboratories; recipient agrees to two years of employment with UVAHS Medical Laboratories.

Scholarships (Graduate)

Applicants for graduate scholarships must be accepted into an approved masters or doctoral program in Medical laboratory science or related areas and be a U. S. citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. Grade point average, references, professional and extramural activities and financial need are considered.

Commonwealth of Virginia Graduate Tuition Assistance Funds

Awards are given to students entering the graduate program full-time. The majority of the funds must be used for Virginia residents. Print and complete the application below, and mail it to the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, P.O. Box 980583, Richmond, VA 23298-0583. Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships

The VCU chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards two Graduate Scholarships ($1,000 each) funded by the School of Graduate Studies. One of these scholarships will be awarded to a master's degree candidate and one to a doctoral candidate in recognition of demonstrated academic excellence.

All students who are pursuing a graduate degree and who will be continuing their studies full-time for both semesters of the year of the award are eligible to be considered. Master's degree students should have completed the equivalent of at least one semester of full-time study toward their degrees and should have attained a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 or better. Students must be nominated by their department.

Jessie Hibbs/Marian Waller Scholarships

The VCU/MCV Women's Club awards two scholarships each year. The scholarships are for $1,000 each and are awarded to a female graduate student from each campus in recognition of academic excellence and financial need.
